A pickled cucumber is a cucumber which simply has been pickled in a brine, vinegar, or other solution and left to ferment for a period of time, by either immersing the cucumbers in an acidic solution or through souring by lacto-fermentation. Pickled cucumbers are often part of mixed pickles.

The word 'Pickle" comes from the Netherlands

In Dutch, to salt or brine something is called pekel. The word may also come from the German pökel or pökeln.

Americans consume about 9 pounds of pickles per person every year! The most popular type remains kosher dill, thanks to the large numbers of Eastern European Jews who emigrated to the United States and New York City in the late 19th century.

People have been eating pickles ever since the Mesopotamians started making them way back in 2400 B.C.E.
